Mechanical Keyboard Layouts Explained: 65%, 75%, TKL, 96%, and Full Size

A keyboard layout is a trade: desk space in exchange for dedicated keys. The smallest board is not automatically the best, and the largest board is not automatically the most productive. The useful question is simpler: which keys do you want available without holding a function layer?

This guide covers the common layouts you will meet when shopping for a mechanical keyboard: 65%, 75%, tenkeyless, 96%, and full size. The percentages are approximate rather than formal engineering standards, so two products with the same label can still arrange their keys differently.

Start with the keys you use every day

Before comparing models, note how often you use four groups of keys:

If you enter numbers all day, removing the number pad creates friction. If your work is mostly writing and browsing, a full-size board may occupy valuable mouse space without giving you much in return. The right layout follows your work rather than a trend.

65%: compact, but still practical for arrows

A 65% keyboard normally keeps the alphanumeric section, modifiers, and dedicated arrow keys. It removes the number pad and function row, while placing less-used navigation commands on a secondary layer or in a narrow column.

The main adjustment is the missing function row. If your software relies on F-keys, check the board’s layer shortcuts before buying. A compact layout saves space only if its shortcuts do not slow down your daily work.

75%: compact without losing the function row

A 75% board keeps the function row, arrow cluster, and a selection of navigation keys in a compressed frame. It is a common middle ground for people who find 65% too dependent on layers but do not need a number pad.

Keychron’s K2 and low-profile K3 are examples of the category. Both use an 84-key 75% arrangement, but their physical typing experience differs: the K3 is an ultra-slim low-profile model, while the K2 uses a more conventional mechanical keyboard profile. Layout is only one part of the decision.

Choose 75% when you:

Tenkeyless: the conventional layout without the number pad

Tenkeyless, often abbreviated TKL or described as 80%, removes the number pad from a standard keyboard while preserving the function row, navigation block, and arrow cluster. Keychron’s K8 and C1 sit in this category.

TKL is an easy transition from full size because the main key groups remain visually separated. It offers more mouse room without asking the user to learn many shortcuts. The trade-off is width: a TKL board is still larger than a 75% model.

96%: nearly full-size function in a compressed frame

A 96% keyboard keeps a number pad but compresses the spaces between the alphanumeric, navigation, arrow, and numeric sections. Keychron’s K4 uses this approach with 100 keys.

The advantage is obvious: you retain numeric entry while reducing width. The disadvantage is density. Arrow and navigation keys can feel crowded, and touch typists may need time to find the boundaries between sections.

A 96% layout makes sense for:

Full size: maximum separation and dedicated access

A full-size keyboard usually provides 104 keys in the US layout: alphanumeric keys, function row, navigation block, arrows, and number pad. Keychron’s K10 and C2 are examples; Q6 Max and V6 Max add enthusiast-oriented features in the same broad footprint.

Full size remains the straightforward choice for heavy numeric entry. Separate key groups are easy to locate, and there is little dependence on layers. The cost is desk width, which can push the mouse farther from the body.

A simple way to choose

Use this sequence:

  1. Need a number pad every day? Start with 96% or full size.
  2. No number pad, but frequent F-key use? Compare 75% and TKL.
  3. Want the smallest practical board with dedicated arrows? Consider 65%.
  4. Prefer familiar spacing and minimal adjustment? Choose TKL or full size.
  5. Need portability? Compare physical dimensions and weight, not just the percentage.

There is no universally superior layout. The best board is the one that removes keys you do not use without hiding keys you do.
